Now on a dedicated cycle lane, I quickly overtake enthusiastic cyclists working hard on fast-looking road bikes while I’m yet to break a sweat. To investigate, we created a journey by bike that takes in all that London has to offer the commuter, starting in the busy East End and finishing atop its fiercest hill in leafy Hampstead. Would electrifying my commute encourage me to hop on the bike all year round, and how will it affect the amount of exercise I get while doing so? Better still, now that ULEZ has prompted a scrappage scheme whereby all Londoners can trade a vehicle for a steep electric bike discount, does it make financial sense? But sometimes I think twice about riding because I’m tired or it feels too far. I don’t need a Top Gear-esque transport mode comparison to tell be that a bike is faster than both trains and cars in London. I’ve been commuting to work by bicycle for years, avoiding public transport and getting some exercise thrown in too. With the ULEZ conversation dominating headlines, anyone looking at beating the traffic by buying a bike to commute will now ponder whether making the upgrade to electric will make a significant difference to the every day commuting experience.
